Student of the Month — Hope for the Next Generation

Each month, Worldfund highlights the unique situation of one of the thousands of impoverished students receiving a high-quality education at Worldfund's partner schools. These stories demonstrate how a child’s development within his or her unique educational environment can help break the cycle of poverty. In addition, they serve as constant sources of inspiration for our team and supporters.

MARCH 2009 > JUAN

Seven-year-old Juan has been a student at the Mano Amiga Santa Maria school in Argentina since its doors opened in March of 2003. Juan is fortunate in that he has a very close knit, loving and supportive family. Unfortunately Juan and his family, like many other families throughout Latin America live in poverty and have very little resources for education.

Juan’s parents, Alberto and Valeria, work at a small nursery selling soil and other gardening products. With the money they make at the nursery they are barely able to meet the family’s basic needs. Despite their difficult circumstances both parents understand that education plays a crucial role in providing their children with better opportunities. Juan’s mother says that were it not for the scholarship he and his sister receive to attend Mano Amiga Santa Maria; they would be unable to send them to school. Juan’s parents are extremely grateful for the opportunity to send him to a school where he receives a quality education which is preparing him for a brighter and better future.

Juan is currently in the 2nd grade and has an older sister who also attends the Mano Amiga Santa Maria School and is at present in the 3rd grade. Juan is overall a good student who is respectful and gets along well with his peers. He loves to play with his friends and dreams of becoming a soccer player.
