Student of the Month — Hope for the Next Generation

Each month, Worldfund highlights the unique situation of one of the thousands of impoverished students receiving a high-quality education at Worldfund's partner schools. These stories demonstrate how a child’s development within his or her unique educational environment can help break the cycle of poverty. In addition, they serve as constant sources of inspiration for our team and supporters.

APRIL 2009 > ALEX

Seven-Year-old Alex was born with a learning disability that makes it difficult for him to learn simple concepts and basic social skills. Physically, he suffers from slight palsy which affects his movement. Last year, Alex joined his two siblings at the Escola Estrela do Mar “Starfish School,” located in Alagoas, Brazil.

Prior to coming to Starfish, Alex had never attended school because his parents believed that the public school system would not be able to provide the attention and support a child like Alex would need. Now in the second grade, Alex has made many improvements both academically and socially. At the Starfish school Alex receives personalized attention and support which are helping him develop his unique talents and ultimately reach his full potential. When he first came to the school, Alex rarely spoke and communicated mainly through non-verbal cues. Gradually he has become more comfortable with both his teachers and peers and this in turn has increased and improved his verbal communication. Alex has made great improvements in his social skills as well and has many friends at the school.

Alex’s story continuously inspires those around him and has taught teachers and students about overcoming challenges and embracing people’s differences. Founder, David Leiner says, “We are grateful that he is a student at Escola Estrela do Mar.” Alex enjoys all subjects and is very diligent about completing his work. His favorite subjects in school are Computer Lab and Science. Alex plans to work with computers when he grows up.
